The Creation Story in the Bible is found in the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, and it describes how God created the world and everything in it. 1. Genesis Chapter 1: The Six Days of Creation

  • Day 1: Light and Darkness (Genesis 1:1-5)
    • “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” The earth was formless, empty, and covered in darkness. God spoke, saying, “Let there be light,” and light appeared. God separated the light from the darkness, calling the light “day” and the darkness “night.” This marked the first day.
  • Day 2: Sky and Waters (Genesis 1:6-8)
    • On the second day, God created the sky to separate the “waters above” from the “waters below.” This sky, or “firmament,” was called “heaven.”
  • Day 3: Land, Seas, and Vegetation (Genesis 1:9-13)
    • God gathered the waters under the sky into one place, allowing dry land to appear. The dry land was called “earth,” and the gathered waters were called “seas.” On this day, God also created vegetation: plants, trees, and all kinds of fruit-bearing flora. Each plant and tree was created to bear seeds, allowing them to reproduce according to their kinds.
  • Day 4: Sun, Moon, and Stars (Genesis 1:14-19)
    • God created the sun, moon, and stars to separate day from night and to serve as signs to mark seasons, days, and years. The sun was given authority over the day, and the moon and stars over the night.
  • Day 5: Sea Creatures and Birds (Genesis 1:20-23)
    • On the fifth day, God created the creatures of the sea—fish, great sea monsters, and every living thing that moves in the waters. He also created birds to fly above the earth across the sky. God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”
  • Day 6: Land Animals and Humankind (Genesis 1:24-31)
    • God created all kinds of land animals: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind. Then, God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness.” God created humankind, male and female, in His own image. He blessed them and commanded them to “be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every living thing that moves on the earth.” God also provided every seed-bearing plant and fruit-bearing tree as food for humans and animals.
  • Day 7: God Rests (Genesis 2:1-3)
    • On the seventh day, God had completed His work of creation, and He rested. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it He rested from all the work He had done in creation.

2. Genesis Chapter 2: The Creation of Man and Woman

Genesis 2 provides a more detailed account of the creation of humans and their environment:

  • Creation of Man (Genesis 2:4-7)
    • God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, making him a living being. This first man was named Adam.
  • The Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:8-14)
    • God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and placed Adam there. The Garden of Eden was filled with every tree that was pleasing to the eye and good for food, including the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
  • God’s Command to Man (Genesis 2:15-17)
    • God commanded Adam to work and take care of the garden. He was permitted to eat from any tree except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, for eating from it would result in death.
  • Creation of Woman (Genesis 2:18-25)
    • God saw that it was not good for man to be alone, so He decided to make a helper suitable for him. God brought all the animals to Adam to name, but no suitable helper was found among them. So, God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep, took one of his ribs, and made a woman from it. Adam called her “woman” because she was taken out of man. This account also establishes the institution of marriage, stating, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
