Daniel in the Lion’s Den
he story of Daniel in the Lion’s Den is a well-known biblical narrative found in the Book of Daniel, Chapter 6. It is a story of faith, courage, and God’s deliverance.
Summary of the Story
- Daniel’s Faithfulness and Favor:
Daniel, a Jewish exile in Babylon, had risen to a position of high authority under King Darius because of his exceptional qualities and integrity. He was one of three administrators over the kingdom and was so distinguished that the king planned to set him over the entire realm (Daniel 6:3). - Plot Against Daniel:
The other administrators and satraps (regional governors) became jealous of Daniel’s favor with the king and sought to find grounds to accuse him. However, they could find no corruption in him because he was trustworthy and diligent. Knowing Daniel’s faithfulness to God, they devised a plan targeting his religious practices. - The Decree Against Prayer:
The officials convinced King Darius to issue a decree stating that anyone who prayed to any god or human other than the king during the next 30 days would be thrown into the lions’ den (Daniel 6:7). The king, unaware of the plot against Daniel, signed the decree, which, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, could not be altered. - Daniel’s Unwavering Faith:
Despite knowing about the decree, Daniel continued to pray to God three times a day, as was his custom, with his windows open toward Jerusalem (Daniel 6:10). The conspirators caught Daniel praying and reported him to the king. - Daniel in the Lion’s Den:
Though King Darius was greatly distressed and tried to save Daniel, he was bound by the law he had signed. Reluctantly, he ordered Daniel to be thrown into the lions’ den but expressed hope that Daniel’s God would rescue him (Daniel 6:16). A stone was placed over the den’s mouth, and it was sealed with the king’s signet ring. - God’s Deliverance:
That night, the king could not sleep and rushed to the lions’ den at dawn. He called out to Daniel, hoping he was still alive. Daniel responded, saying, “My God sent His angel, and He shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in His sight” (Daniel 6:22). Daniel was unharmed because of his faith in God. - Justice and the King’s Decree:
Overjoyed, King Darius ordered Daniel to be lifted out of the den. Then, those who had falsely accused Daniel were thrown into the lions’ den, and they were immediately overpowered by the lions (Daniel 6:24). King Darius then issued a decree to all the nations, praising the God of Daniel as the living God whose kingdom will never be destroyed and whose dominion will never end.
